100 år med Mandela

I dag ville Nelson Mandela have fyldt 100 år. I de 95 år han levede, nåede han at blive betragtet som både terrorist og frihedshelt. Men mest af alt vil han blive husket som en inspiration og et symbol for undertrykte mennesker i hele verden.

Nelson Mandela var en vigtig brik i sejren over det sydafrikanske apartheidstyre, der delte mennesker op i racergrupper, med de hvide som overherrer. Og han er et vigtigt symbol for alle mennesker der kæmper imod racisme og undertrykkelse.

Breaking the curse of 1966

As a player, Gareth Southgate missed the final penalty that saw England crash out of the 1996 European Championships in the semi-finals – a kick that started the latest 22 years of hurt for England. As England manager at Russia 2018 he might just have begun a quiet revolution that could end the curse of 1966.

England did not win or reach the final of this year’s football World Cup, crashing out to Croatia in the semis. But perhaps manager Southgate, the Football Association and the players have sown the seeds for future success. Read more of this post

Students saved South Africa

The Nelson Mandela Centenary will be making headlines around the world on July 18. But 50 years ago, Mandela was in prison and the ANC were virtually defunct within South Africa. Instead, it was a students’ organisation that reignited the struggle against apartheid.

As we celebrate the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela and his contribution to the defeat of apartheid in South Africa, as well as the inspiration he still holds for oppressed people around the world, we must remember to also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the South African Students’ Organisation (SASO).
