New book points towards a new Swaziland

There are not enough books coming out of Swaziland to describe what is after all a unique culture and society that is, in its present absolute-monarchy-dictated form, in many ways brutally detrimental and stifling to its population.

Literature from Swaziland, in both English and siSwati, is a relatively recent phenomenon and those who have had the courage to challenge the status quo of poverty and repression in Swaziland in their fiction, such as Sarah Mkhonza, have often been harassed, ordered to stop, and exiled. Denmark to vote on recognition of Western Sahara

Danish party the Red-Green Alliance (RGA) Thursday put forward a bill that would see Denmark recognise the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a state formed by the indigenous population of Africa’s last colony, the Saharawis of Western Sahara, in 1976 and run from refugee camps in neighbouring Algeria.

SADR has been recognised by over 80 countries and is a member of the African Union. Western Sahara was initially colonised by Spain and since 1975 by Morocco – a colonisation that no other country recognises. Read more of this post

Read more of this post

Danish conference on Western Sahara brings conflicting parties together

The Danish United Nations Association hosted an international conference on the conflict in Western Sahara in Copenhagen on Saturday. The conference included presentations from both parties to the conflict, as well as from former UN representatives, experts, and Scandinavian politicians.

“We believe that it is vital that the Western Sahara conflict is finally put firmly on the international agenda”, the Danish UN Association said in a press release prior to the conference. “Having representatives from both sides of the conflict will enable us to shed light on the conflict in a way that hasn’t been seen before in Denmark”.

Danish Major General, and former commander of the UN Mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Kurt Mosgaard, gave the first presentation where he amongst other things argued that in order to have a fruitful discussion on the issue of Western Sahara, Read more of this post

The true face of injustice in Swaziland

Often the true extent of poverty and injustice is hidden behind the euphemism of impassive figures and statistics. Such a generalized picture can easily be misleading and desensitizing, however, if it is not qualified by concrete and personal accounts that reveal the true and emotive extent of poverty and injustice in the world.

The story of a young man, Thembinkosi Ngcamphalala, whom I met briefly in rural Swaziland last October is such an account. A bright and spirited young man who had done well in school and had a promising future, who suffered a cruel and ultimately fatal injustice at the hands of a repressive and inhumane regime. Swazier revser landets udemokratiske regering

Read more of this post
