Seks Sahrawiere afbryder sultestrejke – forventes løsladt

Efter at have indgået en aftale med de Marokkanske myndigheder, har seks af de 36 sultestrejkende Sahrawiere afbrudt deres sultestrejke, og forventes løsladt i løbet af et par dage som en følge af denne aftale. Det drejer sig om de følgende: Ali Salem Tamek, Brahim Dahane, Ahmed Nasiri, Yahdih Tarouzi, Rachid Sghir og Saleh Labihi. Sultestrejken begyndte den 18. marts, og de sultestrejkende Sahrawier er alle i en kritisk helbredsmæssig tilstand.

De sultestrejkende er kommet med følgende udtalelse:

“We want to announce to the public that we have decided to suspend our open hunger strike on the evening of Tuesday, April 27th, 2010, after we have received pledges from the Moroccan authorities following many dialogues and meetings during the last two weeks of the strike regarding our case. And we note that the health status of the group is affected by the hunger strike, many complications, as well as suffering with a number of other chronic diseases. In the end we are sending our regards and appreciation to all international supporters of democracy, human rights groups, governments, parliaments and organizations who have supported us throughout in this battle for our right to dignity. And the same to all the Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons for their involvement in hunger strike in solidarity with our fight.

Der har i de sidste par dage været stigende pres på FN og Sikkerhedsrådet, især efter FNs generalsekretærs møde med lederen af Polisario, Mohamed Abdelaziz, sidste fredag, og efter at diplomater i Sikkerhedsrådet har modtaget breve fra over hundrede NGOer, parlamentarikere og kendte mennesker, herunder Amnesty International og Human Rights Watch, der opfordrede FN til i højere grad at monitere menneskerettighedssituationen i Vestsahara og lægge pres på Marokko.
